The past few years have seen remakes, remasters, and more in the world of gaming take center stage and usher in a revamping of classics from a bygone era. Now, it seems some MMOs and virtual worlds are making the same comebacks, as ToonTown: Rewritten sees thousands of daily users and the same can be said for Club Penguin Rewritten. Now, it looks like Webkinz is entering the fray and is getting a makeover to capitalize on the nostalgia of the mid-late 2000s.

With the gimmick of being a stuffed animal that had an online counterpart during the normalization of regular internet usage in the respective decade, all of the previous users are grown-up now and might be willing to dip their toes to relive some of their memories. Webkinz had a banner year in 2006, with more than one million accounts and earning $100 million in the fiscal year. It seems to have persisted into the 2010s, focusing more on a kid-friendly approach.

It’s evident that the best years of Webkinz are in the past, even if it’s managed to stay afloat for fifteen years. Regardless, GanzWorld seems committed to make this comeback a big thing, as it’s making waves and making impressions. Some fans aren’t very eager to try the new version though, with one commenting: “Honestly mad. No wonder their customer service & update progress on the original game is s***. Literally nobody who currently plays wants to play this. We’ve spent hundreds already why would we.

With the reputation of Webkinz being a bit shaky and not as favorable as its counterparts like Club Penguin or Habbo Hotel, one has to wonder how this comeback will pan out. It sounds like it might not be GanzWorld’s main focus anymore, but if a lot more work is put into the game, it could spark a considerable revival and even recapture old players in the process.
