When one thinks of nostalgic games, they recall the fond memories they had at a different point in their life. Mine varies from being #1 in Guitar Hero III to trying to break Halo 2 to its core. One title that I thought was lost to time was Toontown Online, an MMO from the minds of Disney that was surprisingly deep and rewarding for a game-oriented for kids. So, when I discovered Toontown: Rewritten, I had to install it as soon as I could.

A passion project from several devoted fans, it’s a true pleasure to play this game with the knowledge and experience that I have after all these years. The environments are recaptured to perfection, and, believe it or not, there’s an active userbase of thousands of players at any given time. For a group of fans to mirror the likes of Disney is nothing short of an impressive feat, especially with no money coming in.

My time delving into the landscape of Toontown Rewritten so far has left me pleasantly surprised. Everything is just how I remember it and it runs very well. I did experience a crash, but I lost no progress and got right back into the action within two minutes. The player base is quite a bit friendlier than the majority of online games, thanks to Toontown’s jovial, laid-back nature. There’s still a lot of fun to be had and I’m just scratching the surface.

As Disney has forgone the copyright for Toontown and a thought-out disclaimer is ushered onto players before they dive in, I don’t feel bad for enjoying a slice of nostalgia pie. The easy drop-in/drop-out nature and calming pace of the game will have me coming back and playing for several hours to come. There’s still some work to be done for it to be considered a full recreation, but the team is communicative and actively hiring volunteers. Head to their website to learn more!
