Editor’s Note: If you just want to hear about the requirements for applying, check out this video on our YouTube Channel. Then come back and read this article.

Phenixx Gaming has seen some solid growth this year in readership, even just five months into 2020. Because of that, we’ve decided that it is time to bring in some new voices to share even more great content with our readers. Phenixx Gaming was built on the idea of diverse voices that represent all walks of life in the gaming industry.

If you’ve followed the site at all in the past year, you’ll know that my Managing Editor and I are both physically disabled, I am gay, one of the other staff members is pansexual, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. On top of that, some of us struggle with things like depression, anxiety, and other Mental Health battles.

Phenixx Gaming is hiring now, so let’s talk about the things you need to know before you apply. First off, here are a series of questions you should answer for yourself before you submit an application. Also, throughout this article you’ll see images of games that have been reviewed on this site, to give you an idea of the possibilities that are in store for you.

Do you want to cover the latest gaming news and review some of the newest Indie and AAA games? Do you want to talk about the gaming industry from your unique perspective or review things like music, TV series, or movies? Do you want to be a part of a growing entertainment platform that seeks to bring new voices and perspectives into the gaming sphere? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then you’re in the right place.

Now, before I get too far ahead of myself by telling you what we expect, I want to make something very clear. Currently, even though the site has seen significant growth over the past year, we are not quite at the point yet to be able to monetize well enough to compensate our writers for their time.

Because of this, we compensate you by providing review codes for games that we receive from PR contacts. These games are yours to keep after submitting a review. More information will be provided on how you would go about requesting games to review when you apply. Without being able to monetize quite yet, we are looking for dedicated volunteers who want to enter the gaming journalism industry and help us grow to new heights and milestones.

Since its creation, Phenixx Gaming has been a passion project. It is the culmination of my lifelong dream to make an impact on the gaming industry in a way that celebrates diversity and stands out from other sites and platforms. We have big plans for where Phenixx Gaming can go in the future, but anything worth pursuing takes time and effort to get there.

I tell you this because another tenet of Phenixx Gaming’s mission is transparency. We have no credibility with our audience or the industry if we’re not honest. We don’t get paid for reviews. We don’t get paid for opinions. We also will not do advertisements for things that we don’t believe in ourselves. However, in return for not being able to pay right now, we intend to assist you in cultivating a writing style that is unique and distinct, so that our readers may one day come to the site specifically to read your content.

Other sites don’t put as much focus on the individual as we do. Some require the writing to be similar, to follow a similar formula in terms of structure and viewpoint. We are not that way. We encourage you to be yourself and to write about things you are passionate about. People will notice if you aren’t passionate about what you’re doing and we’re not in the business of phoning it in.

From here, let’s talk about the qualifications that you need to possess in order to become a part of the team. These are all required, no matter what order they are in. We want to build a tight-knit group of people both in our staff and in our community, but this is still a job and we want you to see it as such.

The first thing that you need to know is that all applicants must be 18 years of age or older. We aren’t comfortable with employing minors, even as volunteers. You must also have a good grasp of the English language, along with a proper understanding of grammar and sentence structure. We are here to help you become a better writer, but we will not teach you to write in the first place.

Experience as a gaming journalist is NOT required. However, we do require that you be willing to commit to writing 3 articles per week as a minimum. We will explain why we’ve put this quota in place once you apply, but the short version is that we require steady content to build a readership and we maintain a clear schedule that articles are posted on as well.

You are welcome to produce more than just the three articles per week if you’d like. We encourage you to talk about anything you are passionate about in the gaming and entertainment industries. Right now we have articles for television shows that go up each week, we have articles about music, along with our ever-growing portfolio of gaming reviews and content.

The next thing we require is that you have a passion for gaming and entertainment. This is a job, even if it is an unconventional one. However, we don’t want this to be something you dread doing. In fact, without a passion to play and review games, or to review various forms of entertainment, what would be the point?

Along with this comes another thing we ask of you. We want you to be able to accept constructive criticism and feedback for your work. Our goal is to help you become better writers and content creators. We won’t be rude or mean about it, so we ask that you be willing to keep an open mind and follow our guidelines and instructions. We want to help cultivate your unique voice and style into something professional and if you are fighting us the whole way, that becomes impossible.

We do all of our coordination over Discord, so a Discord account is required. We also ask that you keep us up to date on your schedule and any complications that come up. We understand that people have lives and that sometimes things happen, so if you are open and honest with us, we’ll work with you to compensate for those problems.

However, if we feel that you are making excuses to avoid meeting your obligation to us or if it becomes a frequent problem, we will consider making other arrangements. Joining Phenixx Gaming is a commitment, and while we will be accommodating and understanding, we expect you to honor your commitment to the site and our audience.

With those requirements out of the way, here are some bonus things that will help your chances once you apply. These are things that aren’t required but will make you more desirable as an applicant. Do not worry if you don’t meet all (or any) of these, we aren’t going to turn you away outright unless you don’t meet our other requirements.

Since Phenixx Gaming runs on the WordPress platform, having at least a basic understanding of how WordPress works will help tremendously. If you have no experience that is perfectly okay, we have a writer’s guide that we provide to every new hire which will help you understand how we do things. In addition, our staff is always available to answer questions and help you figure things out.

Phenixx Gaming is also on multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. So, having a social media presence of some kind with which to share our articles and content would help us reach more people. An understanding of various Reddit gaming communities would also help us out, as we’re still figuring out how to promote our content there.

Also, while we don’t require past experience working at a gaming journalism outlet, a resume detailing your past work experience and your skill set would help us to gauge where you are at and what your strengths are. Along with that, when you send in your application we would like you to give us a brief bit of detail on what your favorite games, genres, and entertainment are so that we can get an idea of the things you’d like to cover.

Letting us know what platforms you have in terms of consoles or PC also helps to determine what sorts of things you can cover in terms of reviews. That, in turn, will also help us to figure out what types of review codes we can give you, and it will inform me when I request games you’re interested in.

Now then, you are probably wondering how to actually apply to be a part of our site. The process is fairly simple. All you have to do is send an email to alexxaplin@phenixxgaming.com that contains a few things, along with any questions you may have. Here is what you need to have in your email.

  • Your name and age
  • Any information such as a resume or your likes and dislikes
  • One or more writing samples between 300-500 words at minimum. These samples can be links to published articles if you have previous experience, or they can be an article you write yourself for the application. The more samples you provide, the more we can see what your strengths are and how we can help you grow.
  • Any other information that you think we might want to know about.

With all that in the email, you’ll be good to go. We look forward to bringing even more people into the Phenixx Gaming family. We hope you’ll consider joining us on this adventure, and help us bring Phenixx Gaming to new heights and successes.
