Dragon Quest is one of those JRPG franchises that I’ve always wanted to get into since I love both Dragon Ball and Chrono Trigger. However, with the vast array of games the series has spawned over a 30-plus year history, it’s certainly easy to keep putting it off. Nonetheless, I always keep my eye on the franchise searching for that perfect jumping-off point to get invested in the series. This week, Square Enix announced not one, but two new games within the Dragon Quest franchise that will be coming in the near future.

The first major announcement came in the form of a spinoff title within the Dragon Quest: Monsters series. Set within the charming world of Dragon Quest this series is Square Enix’s interpretation of the monster catching genre popularized by Nintendo through the Pokemon franchise. The last game in the series, Dragon Quest: Monsters Joker 3 was released in 2016 exclusively in Japan and was developed for the 3DS. Little details have been released apart from the announcement that this new title will be for the Nintendo Switch. The trailer does seem to hint that this new iteration may be a reboot for the franchise.

The second major announcement for the Dragon Quest series relates to the newest upcoming action RPG. Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai received a new gameplay trailer and an official release date of September 28th, 2023. This game is based on the widely popular Adventure of Dai manga and anime series. Infinity Strash will contain two distinct modes at launch. The first is a cinematic story mode which follows the events of the anime. The second mode is titled the “Temple of Recollection” and is essentially a dungeon crawling mode that allows you to traverse through ever-changing maps defeating enemies and progressing your character.

Infinity Strash will be launching on PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Players who pre-order the game will receive Dai’s “Legendary Hero” outfit and the Bond Memory “The Hero’s Tutor.” Bond memories are essentially in-game items that augment your character’s abilities but also unlock special cinematics which will replay events from the original manga. Additionally, players who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition will receive bonus outfits for the characters Popp, Maam, and Hyunckle respectively.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
