Ever since I played the closed PC Network Test for Gundam Evolution back in April, I’ve been keenly waiting for the chance to play some more. A hero-shooter based on various mecha from the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is right up my alley, and making it free-to-play is icing on the cake. The game had a closed network test on consoles in June, but aside from appearing at a couple of conventions, there has been no other news. The official Gundam Evolution Twitter account has mostly been posting marketing content for the game or related Mobile Suit Gundam media.

Evidently, I’m not alone. Many others have been clamoring for more news, whether it would be an open beta test or even a more concrete release date than the current “2022” timeframe. People looking forward to the game would finally get something on Tuesday when an official eSports account was announced.

The reception seems a little mixed at the moment. On the one hand, having some focus on eSports could bring in a more competitive audience. It might even do wonders for the game’s exposure in the long run when you add in the free-to-play element. Conversely, many find it odd (at best) to announce a dedicated eSports Twitter account when the game has only had two closed network tests and is still without a release date.

It seems like a healthy assumption that more news should be coming soon. Unless BANDAI NAMCO plans to retread some of what they’ve already posted on the main Twitter account, it will be difficult to post any new content without a game for people to play. Here’s to hoping that this is a sign of more to come.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
