I’ve never been a die-hard fan of fighting games, but I do love a great rhythm-based game. The good news for fans of both genres is that Modus games revealed a great new IP at Gamescom’s Future Game Show that mixes both elements into something very innovative. God of Rock is not set to release until this winter, but it is available to wishlist on Steam now. As well as heading to PC, God of Rock will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox X|S, and Xbox One. Here’s what you should know.

In a new trailer for the gameGod of Rock asks players to beat up enemies in a pretty unconventional way. Instead of direct combat, you’ll participate in rhythm game mechanics to win. As the various prompts for inputs scroll across the screen, music plays and your timeliness impacts the damage delivered to your opponent. Interestingly enough, the music speeds up as you get further into the fight. It gets hard to keep up when you need to finish them off, so there’s bound to be some satisfaction in the victory.

You also have access to special moves, not unlike Guitar Hero. Special attacks include things that can block your enemy’s offense or even deliver a reversal to the foe. Different power-up style attacks like freezing their track or dropping literal bombs on their songs help you get an upper hand as well. You’ll be able to take on friends online or in local multiplayer as well as explore the Story Mode. After seeing the trailer today, I’m beyond sold. Now, the question is whether to go handheld with the Switch or stick to a console.
