I’ve been excited for Forspoken since it was announced. Frey’s adventure in the world of Athia is no stranger to delays, as it was initially meant to release in May, then October of this year. However, it seems that Square Enix has settled on one final release date, which means we’ll have to wait just a bit longer. Forspoken will release for PC and PlayStation 5 on January 24th, 2023.

The announcement reads: “As a result of discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24th, 2023. All game elements are now complete, and development is in its final polishing phase.

We would like to thank you for your continued support and patience on this journey. Your excitement for the game inspires us every day and we cannot wait to share more about Forspoken with you later this Summer!

Truth be told, this delay didn’t really surprise me much. Square Enix has a hefty launch slate in terms of RPGs and action games coming, with games such as Valkyrie Elysium, Crisis Core: Reunion, God of War: Ragnarok, and a few other games set to release through the end of the year. It only makes sense for them to give themselves more time to polish Forspoken, considering it seems to only be the beginning of what will likely be a new franchise.

While I am one of many that are excited about Forspoken’s release, I’m not super disappointed by this delay. I want them to have plenty of time to polish and refine the game’s systems so that when I step into the world of Athia, I can dig deep and enjoy it to the fullest. January 24th isn’t that much longer to wait anyway compared to October, and if the developers get a less stressful time at the end of the dev cycle, even better.
