After a lengthy absence of information, something new has popped up regarding Warner Bros.’ live-action movie based on Minecraft. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Momoa is in final talks to star in the movie and Jared Hess is onboard to direct. Given how large the Minecraft IP is, this could be another large Warner Bros. film that Jason Momoa would star in after recently being in last year’s Dune and portraying the aquatic superhero Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe film franchise.

Public knowledge of the film began in 2014 when the game’s creator, Notch, revealed in a tweet that Mojang was in talks with Warner Bros. Although Shawn Levy was initially attached to the project, by 2016 there was a 2019 release date with Rob McElhenney set to direct. Plans would shift again when McElhenney dropped out a year before this initial release date.

News about production didn’t stay silent for long. Peter Sollett would be announced as the next director for the project in January 2019, and only a few months later there would be a tweet from the official Minecraft Twitter (seen below) that announced the release date for the movie as March 4th, 2022. Delays would end up affecting all of Warner Bros’ projects in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As they readjusted the release schedule for many of their films, the Minecraft movie lost its expected release date and was left with no date at all.

This is the latest development we’ve heard about the film which has faced many changes since it was first talked about over eight years ago. Even though another director is reported to be attached, this is the first time we’ve seen current news that an actor is in talks to star in it. Whether that makes it more likely that the film will come out though, remains to be seen.

From beta, to release, to continued support and side games, Minecraft has only continued to grow in popularity over the last decade. Although there is much interest (and skepticism) about how the game would be translated onto the silver screen, there’s no doubt that this film would be another important part of the franchise. Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
