Since being announced at The Game Awards 2021, the modern port of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has been set to join the impressive lineup of fighting games coming out this year. Not only is it coming out on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, but it’s also based on the more updated arcade version and brings along with it all of the DLC. The biggest detriment to the whole announcement was that it would be using delay-based netcode instead of being updated with rollback netcode as so many were hoping.

I’ve mentioned the necessity of rollback plenty of times before and the results of a successful implementation do wonders now that it’s become so important to any fighting game community. Arc System Works updating their recent BlazBlue titles with rollback has been met with great reception for bringing in both new players and old ones. I can also tell you firsthand that being able to play The King of Fighters XV online with such little issue is a huge factor in what keeps bringing me back. The lack of rollback in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax seemed to take out a lot of the wind in the game’s sails soon after it was announced.

Any lost interest may have been restored with a new announcement from the game’s producer. Although it will be launching with delay-based netcode on March 17th, rollback netcode will be added this summer for the Steam and PlayStation 4 versions. It appears that the Nintendo Switch version will likely not be getting this update, which is similar to the rollback update for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle not coming to the portable console either.

Arc System Works has voiced that they want to support their titles new and old with rollback netcode and it’s a big relief that this is another one. Guilty Gear Strive and the BlazBlue updates have been well received for their rollback netcode, so there is hope that it will be implemented well for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
