The name is Dave, mad Dave.” No, I am thinking of that bi-polar builder ex-builder I hired in Watch Dogs: Legion. He also has a penchant for sleeping with anyone with two legs and shooting people with poor Russian accents because he thinks he a spy. I’m sure his legal defense is airtight for all those murders he’s committed.

That’s enough joking, the James Bond series is oddly treated with grace and wonder. Even in gaming, the series is treated in a god-like way thanks to the N64 game GoldenEye 007, which is still spoken about with glee by the nostalgic. In fact, it is the only spin-off game of the entire series that isn’t either critically and commercially panned, or bland enough that no one talks about it now. As of yesterday’s announcement by Hitman developer, IO Interactive, they are the next one to take a stab at it.

Project 007 (a working title) seems to be in the early development stages by the independent developer and publisher. As a wholly game exclusive story coming to PC and consoles, it will put you in the fancy spy shoes of a double-0 agent. “It’s true that once in a while, the stars do align in our industry,” said Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, “Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities.” Both IO’s Copenhagen and Malmö offices will be working on and hiring for the title.

IO Interactive is working with rights holders and film distributors MGM and EON Productions, with MGM Executive Vice President Global Consumer Products, Robert Marick stating, “James Bond has a strong legacy in the video game space, with some of the most iconic games of all-time based on the character.” He went on to say, “We plan to bring a new take on this legendary franchise to gamers and Bond fans around the world.” Of course, adding to the legacy of Ian Fleming’s legendary spy epics is not going to be a small task for the developer. However, they have set the bar with their Hitman series of late.

Though I’m not the biggest fan of either Bond or IO’s latest Hitman series, it will be interesting to see what the game brings. It is far too early to say anything more for certain, as we only have a codename of a working title. However, I’m sure we’ll find out more in the coming year or so when we’ll start seeing proper trailers of the game. I won’t jump the gun and say I’m excited, though I am interested to see what IO Interactive can bring to the storied history of the character and his world.
