Samurai Shodown Coming to Mobile Devices

In a surprising move this week, SNK announced that the 2019 revival of Samurai Showdown will be coming soon to IOS and Android. Even more baffling was that this decision was made in partnership with Netflix. In an effort to increase revenue streams, the company first announced its mobile games platform in 2021. These games are available to play and download for Netflix members using the mobile app.

However, most offerings for the platform up till now have been relatively meager in terms of content with a majority of the library focused on licensed titles or tie-in games related to various Netflix shows. This is one of the first titles from an established game studio and was previously only available on PC and consoles.

This new version of Samurai Showdown will include the base roster as well as all eleven DLC fighters for a total of 27 playable characters. Additionally, the new mobile version will retain online functionality and feature newly optimized controls. These controls will of course be simplified for the purpose of intuitive play.

Yasuyuki Oda, the game’s chief producer had this to say in regards to the release. “The console version of Samurai Showdown released in 2019, garnering immense support and acclaim from fighting game fans the world over. This helped it branch out into other platforms (including both PC and cloud-based versions). We’re positively delighted to now see Samurai Showdown make its way to iOS/Android as a Netflix mobile app. We hope you all enjoy the game’s intense, heart-stopping weapon-based combat on mobile devices as well!”

It will be interesting to see how the Netflix mobile platform will evolve over the next few years. For the team at SNK, this certainly seems a smart move as the Netflix brand has a huge audience and will no doubt increase the player base in some fashion.
