The game development studio miHoYo has established itself as one to look out for. While they had quite a few games under their belt already, it was in 2020 that their popularity exploded with the hit release of Genshin Impact. The fantasy open-world title is still going strong with their 3.6 Update going live a couple of weeks ago, but the time has come for another game from the developer.

That new game is called Honkai: Star Rail and it’s out now on PC and mobile devices. Although it takes a lot of elements from the team’s other works (especially Genshin), it’s still incorporating plenty of elements to differentiate it from what has come before it. Chief among them are the futuristic space setting and the turn-based gameplay.

The story revolves around an artificial human named “Trailblazer,” who is missing their memories. Chaotic events lead them to team up with members from the Astral Express, a space-faring train that moves through the universe and picks up passengers from all walks of life. They choose to travel together as they try to discover the Trailblazer’s past and what makes them so special.

If the name rings a bit of a bell, it’s likely that you’re thinking of previous games in the Honkai series such as Honkai Impact 3rd. This new entry isn’t a proper sequel though and is considered more of a spiritual sequel. There are some small ties and at least one character who is the same. The absolute biggest ties are simply alternate-universe versions of familiar characters. Fans are sure to find some fun references throughout. For everyone else, they can just jump in and start playing without prior knowledge of events in the series.

Samuel Moreno

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
