Last year during a Nintendo Direct Mini, an announcement trailer debuted for Super Bomberman R 2. This new entry in the series followed the 2018 title Super Bomberman R, as well as the 2020 online spin-off Super Bomberman R Online that closed down at the end of 2022. We knew the sequel would be available on current-generation consoles this time around and would release in 2023, but news about its specific release date has been unknown. Thanks to a new trailer, we now know that it will release on September 13th.

A primary focus for the trailer is breaking down the 4 battle modes. The Standard Mode is your typical Bomberman gameplay mode, with up to 16 players. The Grand Prix mode, which was added to Super Bomberman R through an update is returning, pitting two teams against each other as they compete for crystals and KOs. Another returning mode is the Battle 64 mode from Super Bomberman R Online, allowing up to 64 players to play across separate boards.

Something new is the Castle Mode. This asymmetrical mode features a Castle team that works to protect its treasure chests and an Attack team who are trying to find all of them. Another new feature being added is a Stage Editor. Players can create their own challenging stage and then of course share and play their creations online with others.

Naturally, there will also be a story mode. It’s been enhanced from the first game’s story mode to include exploring sections as well as base-building gameplay, which can then be defended from enemies. Boss battles will also be returning.

One of the most exciting features is that cross-play will be supported across all platforms. Super Bomberman R 2 boasts more features than the previous two entries, and in a lot of ways that seems like a compilation of the successes of both into this new sequel. We’ll have to wait until September to see how it fares.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
