The survival horror genre has seen some notable releases recently. Back in October (just in time for Halloween) we had releases like Scorn and Signalis. Additionally, just last month we saw the release of The Callisto Protocol. The latter took a lot of inspiration from the popular Dead Space series, which is also returning after a nearly ten-year hiatus with a remake of the first game in the series.

To help sweeten the pot for anyone who hasn’t pre-ordered the remake yet, EA has included a particularly fun bonus for Steam users. All pre-orders on the Steam platform will include a copy of the original’s sequel, Dead Space 2.

This pre-order offer is only for the Steam platform and that’s likely due to availability. The original trilogy is locked to PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Although backward compatibility helps a little bit, they’re simply a lot more convenient to currently play on PC through Steam or through the EA App. As to why the latter isn’t offering a similar deal, it can be assumed that they’d rather push their EA Play subscription service which includes the Dead Space trilogy.

The stark visual upgrades, changes to zero-G movement, and the fact that Isaac has a voice are all elements that bring the experience up to date. These elements also bring it in line with the series’ sequels. From a gameplay perspective, it should be easy to play the remake and then bounce to Dead Space 2.

Including a sequel in a pre-order bonus would also seem to reinforce the assumption that the remake will stay quite faithful to the original’s story. We’ll have to wait until it releases on January 27th to see whether any differences are small or more substantial though.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
