I play a lot of Roguelikes and unlike most genres or releases, some games in the genre change drastically over time. Sometimes this is a good thing, and sometimes it can be to the game’s detriment, bloating an otherwise tight experience. In the spirit of the holiday season though, here are 3 Roguelikes that you might want to revisit in 2023.

Dead Cells

If ever there was a game on this list that was the poster child for evolution and massive amounts of content, it would be Dead Cells. Between numerous accessibility features, multiple DLCs (both free and paid), and collaborations with other indie titles, Dead Cells is absolutely stuffed with content.

What is even more surprising is that the development team isn’t done yet. I see news updates in my Steam Library all the time about testing for new content, and it seems like 2023 may have some surprises in store. Seriously, if you haven’t played Dead Cells in a while, this might be a good time.

Rogue Legacy 2

Now I know what you’re thinking: “Rogue Legacy 2 released in 2022! Why would we revisit it?” Well, to be honest with you, the game has changed quite a bit! Since the April 28th release date, Rogue Legacy 2 has been tweaked, twisted, overhauled, and expanded more and more. November 9th saw their most recent major update which added new subclasses, spells, traits, and more!

Don’t forget about the accessibility features either! Not only did the development team pack in a variety of features at launch, but they have also added to those with even more options and adjustments. If anything, these options make it more accessible and enjoyable for a lot of players. If you put Rogue Legacy 2 down for a while, 2023 might be a good time to revisit it.

Crypt of the Necrodancer

While I absolutely suck at Crypt of the Necrodancer and rhythm games in general, there is no denying that the popular music-focused Action Roguelike has a dense wealth of content. In August, they released their Synchrony DLC which included new characters, mod support, and a wealth of content. Since then, they have been providing updates and tweaks and even announced a spinoff called Rift of the Necrodancer.

If you previously played and loved any of these games before, now is the perfect time to revisit them. It is always nice to see beloved games get even more content, and the Roguelike genre is a perfect delivery method for that sort of longevity. This is by no means an exhaustive list either, as there are plenty of other Roguelikes deserving of your time and attention.
