Although most eyes are looking towards the future with Tekken 8, that doesn’t mean Tekken 7 needs to move out of the limelight just yet. The current iteration in the longtime-running fighting game franchise just celebrated a monumental 10 million units sold and the Tekken World Tour is going strong. Bandai Namco is evidently still keen on showering it with love as well with the brand new 5.1.0 update. This is coming four months after the previous 5.0.0 battle update went live.

It’s common for fighting games to receive one last update that focuses on balancing characters or sometimes introducing a final mechanic. With the next entry being teased alongside the announcement of the 5.0.0 balance update at EVO 2022, many had assumed that would be the last bit of new content added to Tekken 7. While the new 5.1.0 update isn’t affecting the balance, it is introducing some fun fanmade content and convenient features.

The Tekken franchise has become known for its customization options and over the years those have extended beyond just being able to give your fighters funny costumes or gimmicky item moves. One of the ways more recent titles have allowed for a unique personal touch is by providing different art panels to use on the versus screen. A new character panel set featuring artwork from fans has now been added with this update.

There are some technical additions as well. A favorite character and costume slot can be registered to a button for immediate choosing, and your previous selections on characters will now be remembered. These settings will not be available when using Tournament Settings though. Online play is also seeing two updates, with the first being an update to how connection status information is displayed.

The second (and much more innovative) update is the new Streaming Mode. Enabling this won’t display the names of online opponents. It’s a helpful feature for content creators and for those who don’t want their information streamed online. You can read through all of the patch notes here from the Bandai Namco website. It’s unknown if this will be the final update, but it wouldn’t be a bad one to end with. The addition of the Streaming Mode is very intriguing though. I can’t help but wonder if that feature will make it into Tekken 8 as well.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
