With the Tokyo Game Show being held over the weekend, a lot of news was revealed about games from the biggest Japanese developers and publishers. One specific announcement that seemed to come out of the blue was for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

Initially released at the beginning of 2020, the game was updated with three DLC episodes and then ported to the Nintendo Switch last September. A year of silence and an “Ultimate Edition” with all of the DLC suggested that support for the game was finished. A brand new trailer proved that idea wrong, however, by revealing that there will be PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ports as well as a second season pass of DLC.

The trailer primarily focuses on the first of three new episodes. Titled “Bardock – Alone Against Fate,” this story arc DLC puts players in control of Goku’s father Bardock, showing the fate of both him and the Saiyan race. Rather than following the canon retelling from the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film, it will instead be based on the original and arguably more iconic versions of the events from the 1990 TV special, Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku. It’s unknown whether Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the recent Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, or perhaps other movies will be the focus of the remaining DLC too.

When it comes to the new ports, it appears they’re looking to take advantage of the updated hardware. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game will feature upgraded graphics and they will run at 60fps. It’s also been confirmed that they will be a free upgrade for PlayStation 4 owners and presumably this will be offered for Xbox One owners too. Below you can find a comparison video from the official Dragon Ball Games Twitter account. A specific release date hasn’t been provided for the new DLC content or the enhanced port, but both are set to come out sometime in 2023.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
