We last heard about the highly-anticipated Bayonetta 3 during a Nintendo Direct in September. Ever since fans have been speculating and hoping that each follow-up Nintendo Direct might show more about the upcoming game that was only given a general 2022 release date. Nobody was expecting a new trailer to drop out of nowhere with a release date, but that’s exactly what happened yesterday. In addition to learning more about the game, Nintendo and developer Platinum Games have shown information about an interesting mode and physical goodies for a special edition.

There’s a lot to take from the trailer, but still not enough shown to know just exactly what is going on. The gameplay looks as fun and over-the-top as previous games have and features a lot of the Demon Masquerade ability that allows Bayonetta to channel whichever demon is linked to the weapon she’s using. We also learn that the katana-wielding character from the end of the previous trailer is named Viola and can summon a Cheshire cat-like monster. She will also be playable and features her own distinct playstyle to help take on the man-made Homunculi enemies that were similarly shown off in the last trailer.

It seems like we may also be getting a multiverse story with this entry. If you’ve played the first two games then the idea of a multiverse doesn’t seem too out of place, although this time around it might just be a much bigger plot point. There’s talk of different worlds, an “alphaverse”, and it even appears that there are different Bayonettas as further hinted in a Nintendo news article. The end of the trailer reveals that the game is still coming out this year and more specifically will be released on October 28th.

As exciting as that is, there’s more to look forward to. A tweet from Platinum Games showed off the Naive Angel Mode, which adds more clothing in moments where Bayonetta looks her most risque. Nintendo also announced on their Twitter accounts that there will be a physical special edition called the “Trinity Masquerade Edition.” It comes with the physical game, a 200-page art book, and three alternate art covers for physical cases of each game.

That last bit might sound a little strange since the first game never had a physical release on the Nintendo Switch console and at best was included as a digital code along with physical copies of Bayonetta 2. A follow-up tweet announced that the original will be receiving a physical version that’s set to be released on September 30th. The pricing for it or any pre-order information has yet to be shared, but we do know that the pre-order for Bayonetta 3 is now available on the Nintendo store.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
