Warner Bros. Montreal, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins and the upcoming Gotham Knights, has announced that the planned PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game have officially been canceled. Gotham Knights will now only release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This is a move that Warner Bros. stated was made in order “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.”

According to Eurogamer, “Warner Bros. did not go into detail on its decision to drop last-gen consoles, or explain when this decision was made.” Warner Bros. did, however, ensure that pre-orders for the game went live as planned yesterday. They also released a new thirteen-minute-long gameplay trailer that showcases the abilities of the playable duo of Nightwing and Red Hood.

This pair of Batman’s proteges will be directly playable alongside Robin and Batgirl in the full game. The game appears to take place after Batman’s disappearance and possible demise. As I said in my original article on Gotham Knights when it was first announced back in 2020, the circumstances under which the Dark Knight appears to go missing may seem quite familiar to players who have finished (or especially 100% completed) Batman: Arkham Knight.

If you’re interested in picking up Gotham Knights once it’s out, something tells me you may want to have a look at that new gameplay trailer. I’ve linked it below in case you’re curious. The game will reportedly have at least two-player (if not four-player) co-op, as well. On a final note, for now, Gotham Knights is currently slated to release on the aforementioned platforms on Tuesday, October 25th, 2022.
