Skater XL has been very successful since it was released and has already made its way onto the eSports scene last year with the FakeSkate Open Live Contest. Now it seems that Easy Day Studios is continuing this initiative, this time in Tampa. The first-ever Skater XL Tampa Pro Esports Contest will be held on May 7th in conjunction with the real-world Tampa Pro skating competition.

Here is what the press release has to say about the event. “Easy Day Studios continues to revolutionize skateboarding with the debut of the first-ever Skater XL Tampa Pro Esports Contest. The special esports event will be held in collaboration with the real-world Tampa Pro skateboarding competition – the world’s most respected and longest-running skateboarding contest. In line with Skater XL’s commitment to expression and innovation, this will be the first time an esports competition will take place alongside a traditional skateboarding competition.

Easy Day Studios will also be releasing the new version of Skatepark of Tampa to be used for the contest for Skater XL on April 25. The park will include new elements featured in the updated pro course at the 28th Annual Tampa Pro competition including course artwork by famous skate artist Lucas Beaufort.”

The Skater XL Tampa Pro Esports Contest will be streamed live on the Skater XL Twitch channel on May 7th. According to the promotional Instagram video and post, there will be cash and prizes given to winners, as with the FakeSkate Open Live Contest. It is great to see eSports expanding beyond fighting games and shooters, especially when it involves getting the real-world skating community involved.

I wonder how long it’ll be before Activision Blizzard tries to do an eSports tournament with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2? Either way, it is great to see skating getting a spotlight in gaming again. Though that may be my nostalgia for the older games in the Skate and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchises talking.
