Marvel’s Moon Knight is back again for its third episode and brings its best foot forward.  This has been the best episode yet, keeping the air of mystery while slowly peeling back the layers revealing something deeper. However, Moon Knight just can’t escape the now traditional issues with being part of the overall MCU, no matter how far it tries to separate itself from the connected vision.

Marc is in full control during this episode, and I believe that helped the pacing and allowed people to enjoy his character as a whole. There was only so much I could take of Steven’s consistent unwillingness to understand his situation, while being so stubborn when his and others’ lives depended on him. Oscar Issac did a fantastic job, however, while he was juggling the two characters simultaneously and bouncing off himself, it created the feeling that he was talking to someone else entirely.

While these dialogue-filled scenes stand out, the more action-packed moments leave a feeling of monotony. Each fight Moon Knight participates in always feels clunky and awkward. They also continue the trend of extremely poor CGI. The stand-out moments are when Marc blanks out and the audience is left with their imagination, creating a darker, more mysterious atmosphere.

In typical Marvel fashion, less isn’t more but more is better. I have an issue with seeing a creative vision compromised due to people’s needs to “see cool action”. That has been very apparent in these last few MCU outings, whether on the small or the silver screen.

The Friendly Types story centers on Marc racing to find Ammit’s tomb to stop Harrow from awaking the god and laying siege among all of mankind. When the gods are introduced Marvel writers face yet another challenge; “why weren’t these gods able to help with Thanos” each time the writers come up with the same lazy answer “well we don’t interfere with mortals”. I find this answer to the evergrowing secret gods and organizations in the MUC to be quite frustrating as it seems to be the main story that beat every other film or show.

I enjoyed this week’s episode a lot more than the previous two just because here we were able to see Issac’s range and capability as an actor.  Once the writers know how to utilize his talents properly I feel Moon Knight may have a very real chance of becoming a huge success.
