It has been a fraught couple of years over at Ubisoft, especially Ubisoft Singapore, as management seemingly ignores the requests of employees and ostensibly continual internal delays of games. I’ve said it a couple of times in articles recently though I’ve been watching back E3 showcases of years gone by, including E3 2017 when Ubisoft Singapore’s Skull and Bones finally unfurled the sails and set forth to open waters. Since then, we’ve seen bits of it, though very little, and with reports of it starting early development back in 2013 following the release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, it is safe to say Skull and Bones has been stuck in development hell for a while.

According to a report by The Gamer, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet discussed that development was going well, and the company was “very happy” with it. Reportedly with no plans to cancel the project following many years and several ideas for its release. As linked above, Kotaku reports it was once an expansion to Black Flag, an online spin-off in the vein of an MMO, and now whatever it is in its current form, I think a Charmeleon. Though as Ubisoft revealed itself back in 2020, additional studios would be joining Ubisoft Singapore, and the game would take on a “new vision.” This new vision is what Eurogamer believes to be “live” elements.

As VGC reported back in January, the Associate Director on Skull and Bones, Antoine Henry, left Ubisoft after almost 15-years with the company. Stating in a LinkedIn post, “Goodbye Ubisoft! After nearly 15-years, today was my last day.” Henry would go on to become a Senior Manager of game design at Riot Games’ Singapore offices immediately after. Meanwhile, reports also suggest that we’re going to see Skull and Bones within the next 13-14 months, possibly as late as March next year.
