Dorfromantik was one of the hidden gems of my 2021 gaming experience. I love city builders, and the calm, peaceful nature of Dorfromantik gives a similar vibe to another favorite of mine, ISLANDERS. As a result, I’ve been following Dorfromantik’s journey through Early Access, both on Steam and social media. To my surprise, Toukana Interactive alerted me on Twitter (through a teaser screenshot) to their newest update, which I had somehow missed.

The new Dorfromantik Winter Update introduces the Midwinter biome, a snowy, frosty sort of biome that you can play around in. Water tiles are cold and frosty, homes are snowcapped, and there are all sorts of wintery elements to change up the look of the biome. This new update also comes with new challenges to test your building skills and keep you on your toes, not to mention give you an incentive to unlock new tiles to place and enjoy.

The update is also meant to enhance performance, reducing loading times and RAM usage by 40%, which is nice since on my older PC it was a little bit of a resource hog. Biomes can now be turned on or off in Classic Mode, and Creative Mode now has a few polishing tweaks as well. Currently, the development team is taking a bit of a break for the holidays, but they have teased some things on the horizon.

They are planning to focus on getting to the 1.0 update, and are quoted as saying “Once we are recharged, it’s all eyes on 1.0 – Maybe we’ll put out some things earlier, be it as a potential 0.4.1, or maybe even as a surprise 0.5 – Either way we’ll also need to work through lots of feedback, lots of suggestions, and even more plans of our own! There are still some unresolved items, like Controller Support and the long-awaited Undo Button waiting for us, after all.

The dev team also has some ideas for after the 1.0 launch: “We have some plans, and even more ideas, depending on the launch’s reception.” Personally, I’m excited. I love the relaxing, calm nature of Dorfromantik, and being able to build a wintery city and environment just sounds fantastic right now. Here’s hoping that more folks find some relaxation and calm from Dorfromantik in 2022.
