Remakes are at that very special age where they only have one thing on their mind. Most plaster right over the blocky, downright horrendously weird, and wonderful artistry of the 80s, 90s, and early 00s with a bit of volumetric lighting. One remake, despite that dour tone, is on the horizon and is exciting is the sci-fi first-person action-adventure from the vision of Doug Church and Warren Spector, specifically System Shock. More specifically, the System Shock remake that is now aimed to release next year with a new publisher standing in the wings giving it that final shove.

In a press release sent out yesterday, Nightdive studios announced its partnership with Prime Matter, a division of Koch Media that now owns Deep Silver, Ravenscourt, and more. In the announcement of the partnership, the press release mentions a release on “PC and consoles next year,” but does not specify any particular day, week, or month. For all we know, we could still be a year out from release. “System Shock has been a true labor of love, and our goal has always been to deliver a game that is as close to perfect as we can make it.” says game director, founder, and CEO of Nightdive Studios, Stephen Kick.

Kick continues to say that the partnership is: “an important step in the growth of Nightdive Studios. It will allow us to offer System Shock to fans all over the world, both in digital and physical goods formats, as well as fully honor our commitments to our fans and, in particular, to our thousands of supporters on Kickstarter, without whom this game would have never been possible.” While that might not be everything some were hoping for, we did get a further look into the all-new screenshots making the hell of fighting the endless darkness on display really pretty in some places and almost Doom 3 in others.
