Right, so after the last three games that Quantic Dream has produced were acclaimed for their gameplay and storylines, they are getting their hands on Star Wars. At least that’s the rumor and innuendo online. French Podcaster, Gautoz (Warning, link is entirely in French), spoke on the rumor and others have picked up the news. Meanwhile, in the English speaking world, Tom Henderson of DualShockers mentioned hearing similar rumors

Look, before I get angry comments telling me to go off my high horse because I find the storylines and gameplay trite and awful, I get it. Some of Quantic Dream’s games are the only adult-focused games that some with limited mobility or other disabilities can play without feeling overwhelmed. I’m all for accessible play in games, and if David Cage’s pretentious prattle is the only way to get there, the rest of the industry needs to step up. Not just in their ability to weed out harassers at Activision-Blizzard, Ubisoft, and elsewhere either. Quantic Dream had their own issues as recently as 2018 too.

I think it goes without saying, however, that with such a company taking on one of the most treasured intellectual properties in recent years, there is a little bit of cause for concern. My biggest issue with Cage’s latest game being how much of it was “Look! a clumsy metaphor for racism, we should do better.” The first game Heavy Rain, was a hodgepodge of misery and button prompts, while the Elliot Page homeless metaphor bonanza hour was more of the same but with magic. I won’t say I am the biggest fan of the Star Wars license, there are hits, there are misses, and then there is The Rise of the Skywalker bleeding out in the ditch. I’ll say it, The Last Jedi was great though it had imperfections.

If Gautoz is correct in saying (Thanks, VGC for the translation), “They have now finished their contract with Sony and will be signing with Disney, it looks like they will be working on a Star Wars game.” I could see some being quite annoyed, as they take their favorite series a little too seriously. We all do that with some franchise or other. I could also see some taking it all in jest, a parody of the typical Star Wars experience if these rumors are indeed true. I just hope (if anything) the game can be a fun game and not Cage/Quantic Dream’s usual 90% movie with 2% interesting gameplay.

Of course, take every bit of this with healthy heaps of salt. There is nothing announced (at the time of writing), and there is no way of knowing how true these rumors are until that point. Part of me is scared of how ridiculous the idea could be, with tapping X to feel the force and trying to save a kid with all these Quantic Dream tropes. However, I am also a little excited to see it happen too.
