It is official! If ever you have played KOTOR, one of the single greatest games to release in the early 2000s, then you have likely been dying to see the continuation of this amazing series. Finally, we might see something progress in the not too far away future.

At the PS5 showcase this September, Aspyr Studios officially released a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake trailer. I may have cried a little because I can remember having played this game all the way back in 2003 on the original Xbox. I played it well until Skyrim was released in 2011. Many, many worthwhile sleepless nights were had, and now there are more to come.

If you haven’t already, go to the KOTOR trailer on YouTube and watch for yourself and shed your own happy tears. The trailer is also embedded at the bottom of this article. No release date was announced, and really there was only just a teaser made available.

However, there are no longer any rumors on who’s making the game. Officially, the game is coming from the legendary studio Aspyr. They have been responsible for several of the greatest Star Wars and LucasArts remakes over the last decade. This is including, but not limited to: Bounty Hunter (2002/2019) and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (2003/2020).

Now comes the best news of all: EA is in no way involved. This means there is zero chance for them to come in and mess up a good game. Instead, this cult classic of a game is in the accomplished hands of a studio that has a history of respecting the original values of a game and its community.

Now comes the not-so-great news. KOTOR will be a PS5 exclusive and will (for the first time ever) leave behind Xbox consoles. However, this does not mean that you are necessarily trapped into buying a new console for what is currently listed at nearly $1,000 by horrible humans.

According to the highly reputable YouTuber, MrMattyPlays, the remake will also be available on PC. For more info on this please check out his report on all things KOTOR on Mr. Matty’s page, and of course, support his channel if you’d like.

As for the trailer itself, there are two famously heart-wrenching characters: Revan and Bastila Shan. Revan comes in from the background of fog as the face of the game while Bastila narrates. The teaser was brilliantly done given the narrative of the game and series overall. If you haven’t already, go play the originals games! Now is the perfect time to dive in, for return and first-time players.

Finally, there is no guaranteed release date nor even any hints as to a timeline. Personally, that is something I am relieved to see. For too long, we have had games releasing in an incomplete state. For something as pivotal as this I should hope that Aspyr takes all the time that they need to perfect it.

The longer they take on it, the greater the quality of the final product will be. However, it is believed that a 2023 release date is in the works at the soonest. I am inclined to agree, especially given the hard-hitting games Microsoft has already announced for the year, which makes for a very competitive time. At the very least, we will have some fantastic years coming up for gamers.
