For years, I have been talking about one game that I somehow let slip away from me at some point on PS3, and I don’t know why. I never got into the Test Drive Unlimited series on the ground floor. Instead, I joined a while after we were all on Venga Airways. I bet you didn’t expect a Vengaboys “We’re Going to Ibiza!” reference when you got up this morning, but jokes aside, TDU2 was unlike almost everything I’d played. From that moment, that openness captured my imagination, something that wouldn’t be echoed until Ubisoft released The Crew 2, which is similarly large in scope and very open.

Well, a year ago (yesterday) I finally got my wish of a third in the series, as Solar Crown was officially announced by Nacon. We didn’t get much info on the game at the time, though we had been hearing rumors and seeing little teases here and there over the past few years. A year on from that first reveal of Solar Crown, we finally got the location, and it might prove difficult for Americans to drive as we move to the left for the first time. Former British colony and independent territory of the Chinese government, the island of Hong Kong will be the next playground of every motoring playboy with disregard for anything that is second-place and beyond.

Still some ways out, we finally got a release date and the CGI trailer showing off the beautiful 1:1 island. Of course, it is not the world’s largest territory, but (roughly) double the size of the Spanish island of Ibiza, it is still a large playground for the open-world racer. You’ll get to enjoy the muddy shores of the island to the tight streets as you handbrake around the skyscrapers and all over the island. This returns games to the region since its previous inclusions in Shenmue 2 and open-world cop game Sleeping Dogs.

So far we lack any proper gameplay, with the release set as September 22nd, 2022 providing there are no delays. Solar Crown is also set to release on PC (EGS and Steam), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and the Xbox Series family. Oddly enough, it is also coming to the Nintendo Switch. There is no word on when we’ll get to see gameplay, though it may be a while yet with a year until the release.
