After the incredible success of Tetris 99 And Super Mario Bros. 35 (which is now no longer available), Nintendo has released the next game in a similar style, PAC-MAN 99. The game is a competitive title which has you playing against 98 other people, affecting your opponents by the things you achieve in your own game.

Once again, there is a targeting system you can use to make the game harder for specific types of opponents. This means you can attack the opponents with the highest points or the ones attacking you, for example. While the base game itself is for free as long as you’re subscribed to Nintendo’s online-services, there are also optional backgrounds and game modes you can buy in addition to the classic game mode.

What Nintendo is doing with these type of games is really smart, since they’re taking a game everyone knows and has played at least a couple of times in their life, turning it into a new game. On top of that, they’re doing so without actually changing too much about it. In its essence, PAC-MAN 99 is still the same game we’ve had since 1980, just with a couple additions to make it more interesting in the modern world of gaming. A new gaming landscape where battle royale-type games are still not losing any of their popularity.

While I’m not the best at the game myself, I’m honestly excited to see which other games Nintendo will release with this new formula. I’d personally love to see Space Invaders 99 some time in the future, which I don’t think is actually that far-fetched.

Hey there! I'm Aaron, 26 and from Germany. I mostly play games with a stronger emphasis on a good story, but occasionally can be found delving into a genre I'm not too accustomed to. Diversity and accessibility are important aspects in gaming for me as well, which are always important conversations to have for me personally.
