Monday! Loot boxes continued to be gambling, and Super Smash Bros. broke another record. Tuesday, LEGO Star Wars: that bloke that kissed his sister saga is delayed, again; Tripwire really likes that one Hall & Oates song, and TimeSplitters 2 is fully playable in 4K, kind of. Wednesday, Dandy Ace released an accolades trailer, E3 was confirmed to be free this June, and Alexx can’t resist a dreadful pun. Thursday, Erica has moved out the house of PS4 and is looking for a place on PC, as well as, on-rails shooter and the vomit of the 80s, Astrodogs, released on Steam.
Onto this week’s free game on the Epic Games Store, and I’m not going to do my usual thing of giving a mini-review/general opinions based on a short amount of time with it. I’m not going to because I am just not the type of person that 3 out of 10: Season Two is aimed at. I don’t want to say I am one of those people with a dark sense of humor and only that, because it isn’t the case. I also like some broader and strange bits, as I made clear with this week’s review of Doctor Who. However, I do hold an opinion that’s quite strong.
I’m of the opinion that if you are going to do comedy in games, you need to be really good; Portal levels of good. There is an Apple Plus series called Mythic Quest. We saw it revealed at E3 a while back, and it stars Rob McElhenney of Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Stay with me here, as it is a series that’s trying to be a comedy that uses the development of MMOs as its setting; much like 3 out of 10 is the idea of a developer that just makes bad games. Now, don’t get me wrong, Mythic Quest is an alright little series to put on and moderately enjoy, but it isn’t that good, and I’ve got a strong feeling 3 out of 10 is about the same.
Honestly, I am not trying to dissuade you from 3 out of 10, I’m just trying to raise the point that it is a hard thing to pull off and do well. If you’ve seen the trailer and think you’d enjoy it, go ahead. For everything I’ve heard about it, it is quite short episodically, so maybe if I wasn’t so busy I’d have a more detailed opinion on Season Two. Though to do that I’d need to play the whole of Season One too, and I’m not doing that.
All this week, you can pick up 3 Out of 10: Season Two for free alongside Season One (which is still free) until the 15th of April. Next week I’ve got a feeling I’ll be doing this again, as you’ll be able to pick up Deponia: The Complete Journey, Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, and The First Tree. I’ve only played one of those and I wasn’t excited by it, alongside owning one already. It should be fun.
