Go to a local game shop and you can find about one million copies of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic Super Mario Bros. You can even buy them for usually a pretty low asking price. You might be willing to pay, let’s say, $10 for a copy of this retro game. What would you be willing to pay for a sealed copy? If you have a spare $660,000 laying around, then you’re in good luck. That’s what a new record-breaking sale of a sealed Super Mario Bros. game sold for this past week.
Heritage Auctions, a company specializing in the sales of memorabilia like the classic NES game, handled the sale. The world record-breaking $660,000 sale isn’t even for the original print of the game. In fact, it’s the fourth-print version of the game. The big difference: a missing Game-Pak NES-GP code and trademark label by the console’s title. They say the devil is in the details, and those details helped the seller take home a pretty payday.
The game’s condition was a huge help in driving up the asking price as well. The WATA scale, used primarily for comic books, applies to old games as well, especially those of which are stored in cardboard boxes. A 9.6 rating helped this particular game boom in value, as well as the variation mentioned above. I’m not a huge game collector, but how cool would it be to own something like this? Plus, think about the price it may yield in another decade or two? Unreal stuff.
