One of the most iconic Nintendo 64-era games was GoldenEye 007. Like other titles developed by Rare, the game was a huge influence on the first-person shooter genre. Most notably, the game’s multiplayer split-screen experience was wildly popular. As it turns out, a remaster was planned for the Xbox 360 era, but it never saw the light. Now, the files for the game are making the rounds online showing us a bit of what could have come from this remastered version of the game.

Originally, the game was meant to release on Xbox 360 via the Xbox Live Arcade. From what we can see in the YouTube playthrough released last month, the game included some major changes. The most notable thing you can see in the video is 60FPS and 4K resolution. This, of course, is obtainable via emulating but could not have occurred on the Xbox 360. Still, it’s cool to see the game look this modern and clear. It really makes the fact that we didn’t get this game sting a bit more.

Much like the Halo remasters, the game would allow players to switch between old graphics and the remastered look. This is a feature some of the Rare Replay games offer as well. With the files available online, the Youtube uploader, Graslu00, says the game may be available to the public sometime in 2021. That’d be a fun trip down memory lane, although issues of copyright come to mind immediately. Friendly reminder that emulation is illegal, dear readers.

iO Interactive, the team behind the Hitman series, is working on a new James Bond game, but we don’t know what experience that will offer players. One thing is for certain: the 007 Goldeneye days will forever be some of the finest in our memories.
