It was a holiday unlike many others for most of us. Some didn’t get a chance to gather with family for fear of the COVID-19 pandemic. Others face financial hardships that make a road trip tough to pull off. I’m grateful for my wife and two dogs, with whom I spent the Thanksgiving holiday. I’m also thankful for something else: the dancing Pikachu troupe from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In a crazy year like 2020, these small amusements go a long way.

For the most part, this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade felt sort of bare-bones. Without crowds and cheering, the parade was sort of sad. That was until a troupe of Pikachus showed up to dance the day away. I was cooking in the kitchen when I heard them announce their arrival. I don’t joke when I say I ran to my living room to see what was happening.

The dancing Pikachu phenomenon isn’t new. At many Pokemon events, dancing mascot figures make an appearance. It’s just so darn cute I can’t stop thinking about it. There’s something beautiful about the sheer joy these silly Pikachus can offer us in a year with so much stress and heartache. Of course, a brand new Pokemon game would really cheer me up, but we’ll need to wait until next year for that.

The dancing Pikachus were celebrating the kickoff of Pokemon’s 20th-anniversary celebrations that will begin in 2021. There are rumors of new game remakes and other surprises. We also know we’re getting a new Pokemon Snap, so that alone is something worth celebrating. If you missed out on the dancing Pikachus, then take a look at the video below. It’s sort of infections to see them trot around.
