The ice cubes melt, it is that simple. The ice cubes melt and it is detail like that which makes Hideo Kojima the auteur he is. In book publishing, there is one name you know and that’s the author. In film, you may know the actor’s names but most of the time, it would be the director getting high praise. In gaming, we don’t have that unless there is a small independent of one-person making a great game. Since the late ’90s and early 2000s, Hideo Kojima has been known for being that auteur that breaks the mold and makes something with his name on it, instead of just a studio and a title.

It is his work leading the Metal Gear Solid series that thrust him into cult-like fame. A series of overly sexualized women, poor and redundant writing, metal dinosaurs, Cold War fearmongering (the alt title for C.O.D this year), a man with gravel for a throat, and did I mention tactical metal nuclear dinosaurs? I’ve not even gotten to the large bloke on rollerblades or the vampire in one of the best Die Hard games. The series, growing from the pixel-based Metal Gear series, is mental and will forever hold Kojima in the annals gaming history. Though the games are getting on a bit, aren’t they?

As spotted by Gematsu the other morning, the Taiwanese rating board Game Software Rating Management Regulations, has let it slip that the early games in the series are making a possible return for PC players. The listings for the PC re-releases are Metal Gear of 1987, Metal Gear Solid of 1998, and Metal Gear Solid 2 of 2001. Though it is not the only news of the Metal Gear series to break, as soon after came the rumor of a full-blown Metal Gear Solid remake coming “exclusively” to the PS5. The rumor comes from the reasonably reputable RedGamingTech, who claims the game will be coming to the PC and PS5 with a strong claim that it is definitively coming.

Metal Gear Solid 23, and 4 are also said to be coming, but with speculation over how far they will be done up. I won’t lie, if this does turn out to be even slightly true, I and many others can’t wait for their re-releases/remakes. I referenced it at the top; the ice cubes melting in MGS 2 is the reason Hideo Kojima gets to be weird. I want to return to that oil rig of madness and Die Hard with an anime character, it was great.
