Last November saw the release of what is arguably the best Star Wars story in 2019, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Everyone fell instantly in love with its Dark Souls inspired combat, Metroidvania-style exploration, and of course the iconic Star Wars charm. I was among those people as well… until I decided to go for the platinum trophy “A New Hope”. At the time of writing this article, the achievement has an Ultra Rare status of 3.0% attach rate.

See I loved my time exploring the galaxy as Cal and BD-1, the world was so well realized that it made me feel like I was in “A Galaxy Far Far Away”. I loved the characters and the story kept me intrigued till the very end, but this isn’t a review of the game (you can read Mike’s Review here). This is my journey of what was a fun and exhilarating but also a boring, and frustrating endeavor.

I started this journey pretty optimistically as most of the trophies seemed pretty obtainable, like ”Kickoff” where you only defeat an enemy by using kicks. “Big Bang” finds you defeating twenty enemies with explosives and “Look out Below” sees you using your force push ability to send twenty-five enemies over the edge of the map.

Then there were the collectible trophies “Collector”, “A Galaxy Far Far Away”, and “Data Collector”. At first, I didn’t think much of it, as in my head I have platinum in every single Uncharted game (aside from Uncharted Golden Abyss). These trophies are where the game stopped being fun and turned into an exercise of frustration and anger management.

So let’s start off with the enjoyable trophies first. There are eleven story trophies that cannot be missed, then you start with the more miscellaneous ones like “Not So Fast” where you defeat 25 enemies while they are under the effect of Empowered Slow, and “Bank Shot”, which asks that you defeat an enemy by colliding them with another enemy. There is also “Cal Got Your Tongue?” which wants you to slice an oggdo’s tongue.

I found these trophies to be pretty entertaining and not far out of the ordinary for action-adventure games. It did what trophies are designed to do, create different ways for players to experience the game and in the process force them out of their comfort zone.

Once I finished up the miscellaneous side of things I decided to continue with the more grindy achievements like “Back at you”, which requires you to defeat fifty enemies with deflected blaster bolts, as well as “Perfect Timing” (Parry 100 enemies) and “Can’t Touch This”, which wants you to Precision Evade 100 attacks. The bulk of these are ones I did naturally throughout the campaign, however, “Can’t Touch This” did require me to go to the Abandoned Village on the Planet Zeffo to round up a handful of Stormtroopers so I could evade attack after attack for about 10 minutes.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has 256 collectibles needed for the collectible trophies. There are three, ”Collector” which asks you to collect all chests and secrets, “A Galaxy Far Far Away” which wants you to complete all of BD-1’s holomaps and “Data Collector” which asks that you scan all enemy types. These were the most frustrating trophies in the game due to a complicated and at times hard to read map. It also didn’t help matters that force echoes were needed to 100% an area but were not tracked on the map.

Collector” was a tedious experience but I was prepared for that, as I don’t mind putting on a podcast or two (maybe three), grabbing a cup of tea and just hunkering down for a few hours to hunt all the chests and secrets down. The chests were pretty easy and I didn’t have much trouble, it was the force echos, or “Secrets” as they are classified that gave me a hard time.

I would find myself in an area where I had 96% completion. I searched every nook and cranny I could find just to ultimately look at my guide, then scroll through my menus to find which echo I missed and continue that way for each and every area in the game. “Collector” also tied in with “A Galaxy Far Far Away” so once you did one you would get the other right away.

“Data Collector,” I thought would have been pretty easy as I only missed two enemies, a Purge Trooper and a Bounty Hunter. The Purge Trooper I ran across on my road to 100%. The Bounty Hunter on the other hand is what really tested my patience.

In Fallen Order, after you reach a certain part of the story you will be hunted throughout your adventures by the “Haxion Brood”. Each time you run across them there will be either a Robot, a commando, or the infamous Bounty Hunter. It was here I lost all faith. The Haxion Brood spawns randomly on different planets each time you rest at a meditation point.

I would start from Bogano checking the two spawn points there, Zeffo had five or six spawn locations, Kashyyyk had two and so did Dathomir. I would check each and every spawn location multiple times, and it took me five hours of looking for this Bounty Hunter to appear. Each time I came across the Haxion Brood, I only got the robot and the commando never the bounty hunter.

The odd thing is I never actually saw the bounty hunter again. I think I fought him once very early in the game to get the “Scum and Villainy” trophy that wants you to defeat each type of Bounty Hunter, and that was it, he was gone forever. I eventually got “Data Collector” because the game decided to give me an out.

After 5-6 hours of looking, I landed on Kashyyyk for what would have been the umpteenth time. I stepped off the ship just for the trophy to pop. I was relieved and confused. I don’t know how this miracle occurred, I just knew to be grateful and celebrate with my cup of tea. I had just enough time after that to shower and head off to work. It’s the little victories that matter.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a treat to play through, but it was a bit frustrating to grind to the platinum trophy. However, looking back I did have a fun experience with the more miscellaneous ones and even the grinding trophies had their charm. I don’t think I’d ever want to do the 100% again but I would be happy to re-experience the story.
