In Japan, there are four national holidays that occur on the same week. Showa Day on April 29th, Constitution Day on May 3rd, Greenery Day on May 4th and Children’s Day on May 5th. This collection of holidays form Japan’s Golden Week, which is one of Japan’s biggest holidays. Now, given the current Covid-19 crisis, the government has explicitly asked citizens to stay at home during this Golden Week. That said, there are plenty of ways to spend time inside, and a bunch of Japanese publishers are providing some cheaper entertainment.

Steam is currently running its Golden Week Sale, which will end on May 6th. The sale encompasses most of the games on Steam that are under Japanese publishers.

For example, not everything under Square-Enix is on sale, but they have a lot on sale right now. Except for the MMO entries, all the mainline Final Fantasy games are on sale. Haven’t checked out the updated version of Final Fantasy XII? It’s going for $24.99 right now, at half off. Don’t have the cash to get Final Fantasy VII Remake? You can at least check out the original story for $5.99. You also can get Nippon Ichi SRPGs like Disgaea PC ($3.74) and Phantom Brave PC ($2.99). There are also shoot-em-ups like Crimzon Clover ($1.99) and Mushihimesama ($7.99). You can get Capcom’s big hits like Resident Evil 2 ($19.99) and Valkyria Chronicles ($6.79) as well. There’s a good variety of stuff to get into that’s currently on sale.

Maybe you don’t have a good PC, just a Playstation 4. That’s a-okay, because the PlayStation Store is running yet another “Big in Japan” sale, ending on May 8th. While some big mainstays like the Mega Man games are still up there, there are a bunch of new games in the line-up that weren’t present last year. For a better look, you can check out the official PlayStation blog post.

For instance, visual novel hit Zero Escape: The Nonary Games ($14.99) is up once again. However, it’s now joined by fellow hit Danganronpa; with its compilation of the first two games selling for $19.99 and its action spin-off, Ultra Despair Girls, selling for $14.99. Some newer Capcom hits like the PS4 version of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($14.99) and the deluxe Iceborne edition of Monster Hunter World ($46.89) have also joined the line-up, so I guess they’ve officially been around long enough to be put in sales.

While we live in turbulent times, there are plenty of ways to try riding it out. While it’s a shame that people in Japan can’t properly enjoy Golden Week, it’s better to stay inside and play video games instead of going out celebrating for the sake of others.
