One of my favorite games of all time is the original Knights of the Old Republic. At the time of its release, I experienced the game on my relatively new OG Xbox. I had never played a game like it before, but with a huge interest in Star Wars, I thought it was worth a shot. What I found was a love for RPGs, decision-driven gameplay, and an even deeper love for the source material and its canon. Now, rumors of a KOTOR remake are looming, and I’m not all that excited about the prospect.

If you go back and play KOTOR in 2020, the experience is startling. For one, it’s incredibly dated in the graphics department. Plus, the game itself isn’t so smooth. A little part of me wonders how I ever thought it was this expansive, massive, flawless world. For the most part, that happens with games once a decade passes. The rumors of the KOTOR remake, in a dated experience sense, make me think there’s something to be said about returning to the world of The Old Republic.

Here’s where the rumors lose my interest. I want a new experience in the world of The Old Republic. I don’t necessarily think you need to remake the game, especially when Knights of the Old Republic II exists and sort of feels like a complete experience. For the most part, I just want a game set in the same era, but presented with an entirely new story. Yes, that takes longer than a remake, but guess what? It’d be worth the wait.

Of course, there are some issues. They’re currently looking into a Mass Effect remaster. Plus, they think their time with The Old Republic should be left alone, and so do a lot of critics. So, where do we stand? Of course, we want more Star Wars games. While Jedi: Fallen Order  and Battlefront 2 are great current-gen Star Wars games, EA still really dropped the ball on this IP.

Don’t give me a remake of a game I already know doesn’t stand the test of time when I revisit it. Give me something new. Let it be a decision-making RPG, and let Bioware do it. Just dare to do something new.
