It’s hard to pick a Game of the Year, but 2019 had a clear developer of the year. Respawn had a year most teams would die for. On the one hand, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a massively popular game as we enter the final weeks of the holiday season. Plus, their free-to-play battle royale shooter, Apex Legends, is a total treat. Not to mention, Titanfall 2 is on PS+ for free right now, and the player base is booming once more. How’s that for a calendar year?

Is Respawn the Best EA Developer?

The easy debate to throw out to the internet-world is whether or not Respawn is the best EA developer. One could argue both ways, and I love taking both sides for arguments sake. Sure, EA is loaded with great teams doing amazing things. For a long time, DICE seemed like the team to beat. Plus, think about NHL. Then, there’s the pro-Respawn side of things. Two massively popular games in one year. One, a total surprise and real rival to the Fortnite machine. The other, a surprise of another sort: a long awaited EA Star Wars game, years after the company took over rights to the IP.

So, is Respawn the best EA developer. 2019 says yes, and so do I. If you checked out Mike’s Jedi: Fallen Order review, you know he loved the game as well.

Titanfall 3 Must Be Next, Right? Maybe Not

Before Apex Legends released, we thought Respawn was working on Titanfall 3. In a way, they were; the game just seemed to be lagging behind so they turned their attention to Apex Legends. Now that Jedi: Fallen Order is out, we could likely see a new Titanfall game in the future. Hopefully we do; Titanfall 2 was a huge step up from the already impressive original.

There are a ton of things to love about the Titanfall series. It’s not greedy to ask for more either; clearly EA saw value in a third game. That being said, Titanfall 2 is seeing a rebirth, and Apex Legends is chugging along nicely. It might be awhile before we see a third game though. That being said, Respawn can do whatever they want. They certainly earned it with this 2019 run they’ve made. EA better treat them with all the love they deserve, or they’ll once again burn one of their limited bridges to community praise.
