The last conference of E3 2019 has always historically been Nintendo (at least in the past few years), and boy did they come big this year. I had my misgivings after Reggie’s departure, mostly because I know how awkward other presenters can be. However, here is a news roundup of everything we saw yesterday during Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct presentation.

The first E3 2019 reveal for Nintendo was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer that revealed Dragon Quest XI‘s Luminary (and other Dragon Quest characters) joining the fight. This collaboration will happen sometime in Summer 2019. They didn’t really say whether this would be separate from the fighter pass or not, but it definitely looks interesting. This wasn’t the end of the Dragon Quest news though.

A new trailer for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition dropped, showcasing the premise, beautiful visuals, and what players can expect. This edition will contain an expanded storyline, more rideable monsters, faster battles, and the ability to travel to past Dragon Quest worlds. Dragon Quest XI S will release September 27th, 2019.

The next segment had a bit of fun at the new Nintendo of America President’s expense, with Bowser attempting to take over the Nintendo Direct until Doug Bowser stepped in. This little interlude was cute, and exactly what I had worried would be missing with Reggie’s exit.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 was up next, with a new trailer featuring gameplay and the story premise. Luigi, Mario, Peach, and friends are invited to a hotel, which turns out to be more than meets the eye. It also showed off new tools at Luigi’s disposal, and some of the environments you will explore as you play.

The trailer also introduces co-op via Gooigi, a Luigi clone made of goo created by Professor E.Gadd. Multiplayer also comes via the Scarescraper, which supports up to 8 players. Luigi’s Mansion 3 will come sometime in 2019.

The first of many surprise reveals was a reveal for Netflix’s The Dark Crystal, which is collaborating with Nintendo for a new strategy RPG. Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will release on Switch sometime in 2019.

The highly awaited remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening got a brand new trailer, showing off more of the polished visuals and gameplay. The Direct also showed off a new dungeon-crafting mechanic in Link’s Awakening, where you will collect dungeon pieces on your travels, and assemble them in order to explore and find loot. Chamber Dungeons offer unique rewards that will help on your adventure.

Link’s Awakening will release on September 20th, 2019 on Nintendo Switch.

Another surprise came from Square Enix, who revealed that Trials of Mana is getting a remastered version, entirely revamped for a Global release on Nintendo Switch. Trials of Mana will release in Early 2020. Additionally, they announced that the original three games in the Mana series (called collectively the Collection of Mana) are available now on Nintendo Switch.

Then CD Projekt Red entered the fray, revealing that Geralt is coming to Switch this year with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. No specific release date was given, but it will be launching before the year is out.

The next segment showcased a game I am greatly excited for. Fire Emblem: Three Houses had a brand new trailer, detailing some of the game’s plot. The trailer was breathtakingly beautiful and revealed the July 26th, 2019 release date for this epic tactical adventure.

Next came a video of people playing Resident Evil in a haunted house, which was a genius way to not only advertise the Resident Evil games on Switch already but also announce Resident Evil 5 and 6, which will be joining the others on the eShop. No specific release date was given beyond Fall 2019 for the Switch ports of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.

For fans of Travis Touchdown, Nintendo revealed that the No More Heroes franchise is returning with a brand new adventure on Switch. A trailer was revealed for No More Heroes 3, which will release in 2020.

Contra returns as well! Contra: Rogue Corps is a brand new Contra game coming September 24th, 2019. That’s not all the Contra news though, as Nintendo announced the Contra Anniversary Collection. The collection contains 10 games and a 74 page eBook in one shiny package. The best part is, it is available now on the Nintendo eShop!

Daemon X Machina also got a place in the spotlight, with a new gameplay trailer. The trailer not only showed off characters and gameplay but also revealed a September 13th release date. Considering details have been sparse since last year, I’m curious to see what the game is like on launch.

Contra and No More Heroes weren’t the only revived franchises. The Panzer Dragoon series is back with a trailer for a new flying game in the Panzer Dragoon series, aptly titled Panzer Dragoon. This new entry in the series will release this winter.

Surprisingly, despite the Pokemon Direct last week, Pokemon Sword and Shield got a nod and reference during the E3 2019 Direct, reiterating the November release date. They also mentioned that the Pokeball Plus peripheral is supported with Sword and Shield.

While we didn’t get any word on Bayonetta 3 this year, we finally got more details on Astral Chain, the new collaboration between Nintendo and Platinum Games. A new trailer was shown, with more story details and gameplay elements. Astral Chain will release on August 30th, 2019.

Gameplay footage of a game called Empire of Sin, by Paradox Interactive, was shown during the Direct, which looks to be a mobster/gangster themed game. Empire of Sin will release in Spring 2020.

Another highly anticipated release, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order also got a new trailer, ahead of its July 19th launch. This trailer showed off new villains, playable characters, and stunning gameplay visuals. They also showed off the Expansion Pass, which contains content from X-Men, Marvel Knights, and Fantastic Four. The Expansion Pass content will be available starting this fall.

The Direct also took the time to feature Cadence of Hyrule, the Crypt of the Necrodancer crossover with the Zelda franchise. A new trailer was shown, reminding fans of the release date tomorrow, June 13th, on the Nintendo Switch.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was showcased, just in time for the November release window, celebrating the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. There seems to be not only 3D segments but pixel segments as well.

A voiced over trailer for the new Animal Crossing got some airtime, showing off your own island, crafting, farming, fishing, and new navigation mechanics. We also finally have a title and release date. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will release March 20th, 2020.

Nintendo also took the time to show a highlight reel of games coming in 2019 and beyond, including but not limited to:

  • Spyro Reignited Trilogy: September 3rd, 2019
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong: Coming Soon
  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch: September 20th, 2019
  • Minecraft Dungeons: Spring 2020
  • The Elder Scrolls Blades: Fall 2019
  • My Friend Pedro: June 20th, 2019
  • Doom Eternal: Coming Soon
  • The Sinking City: Fall 2019

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition: Winter 2019
  • Dragon Quest Builders 2: July 12th, 2019
  • Stranger Things 3: The Game: July 4th, 2019
  • Just Dance 2020: November 5th, 2019
  • Catan: June 20th, 2019
  • New Super Lucky’s Tale: Fall 2019
  • Dauntless: Late 2019
  • Super Mario Maker 2: June 28th, 2019

After the montage, they showed a new trailer revealing Banjo and his pal Kazooie coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is an interesting addition to the Smash collaborations, especially after the Dragon Quest reveal. Banjo and Kazooie will release in Smash this fall.

After mentioning that Nintendo had many other reveals in the works that weren’t ready yet, they gave one last reveal. The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently in development. No title was shown, nor was a release date given, but a short teaser closed out the show.

To be quite honest, Nintendo hasn’t disappointed with their E3 showcases in a long time, and this year was no exception. My only complaint was that we didn’t see any Bayonetta 3 or Shin Megami Tensei 5 news this year. However, with more games in the works, perhaps the next Direct will fill some of the gaps.
