It’s wild to imagine the CW without it, but Supernatural is coming to an end after 15 seasons.

How long has Supernatural been on? Its’ network, the CW, didn’t even exist when the show started. Back in its first season, the show was on the WB, home of the other popular series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. The show is well past the mark for syndication, and it shows. Multiple channels play Supernatural reruns. Plus, the show has launched a rabid fan base, always eager to write fan fiction, draw pictures, and more.

Executive producers Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer released a statement following the stars’ announcement: “Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us, it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible.  We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared, and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send-off they deserve.

Season 15 will consist of 20 episodes — on par with its current tally. That’s a relief, seeing as the CW recently announced that Arrow would be ended in an abbreviated fashion after eight seasons. The show is a cultural icon, and another great example of sci-fi going mainstream. There are plenty who will be heartbroken, but all good things have to come to an end. CW president Mark Pedowitz joked last year that the only thing the media cared about was whether or not the show got renewed.

Supernatural is currently averaging a 0.8 rating among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 2.4 million total viewers. Better than other CW shows such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but a good sign that it’s time for the brothers to pack it in.
