A side-scrolling adventure about teenagers on their spring break, who go to a creepy island with only one resident? If you were to ask me if this was interesting two or three years ago, I would have told you to take your anime and shove it. However, I played this supernatural thriller, mythical puzzle game called Peregrin and usually, it would be the latter that would get my appraisal. Nonetheless, I found a weakness for Oxenfree.

Well, today (March 21st) until the April 4th, you can pick up Oxenfree for free over on the Epic Games Store. You do not require a credit card or purchase of another game from the storefront. All you have to do is download yet another games launcher, and you will get free games. The Epic Games Launcher and in turn Epic, are running these free giveaways for two weeks, every two weeks for everyone. I can not help but recommend taking up Epic up on their offer.

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. You play as Alex and you’ve brought your new stepbrother, Jonas, to an overnight party on the haunted island. The plans to party, get drunk, probably have sex, and other teenager activities go horribly awry. Alex and her friends break off, come back together, run off on their own, and several other matters of tension.

Usually, I would call this type of game out for being so saccharin or too much like a western attempt at anime. While there are moments of being too “twee” and I hated Jonas with all my might, Oxenfree has it’s moments. However, Oxenfree is a hard game to recommend without speaking about the plot, as it is short and story focused. So I will leave it there.

Will you be picking up Oxenfree and other free games on the Epic Games store? Tell us in the comments, if not then tell us why.
