The Metroidvania genre continues to thrive in the 2020s thanks to a healthy dose of nostalgia and plenty of indie developers eager to keep it alive. There’s enough saturation in the genre now to make it tough to stand out, but some games have an interesting enough concept to stand out among the rest. Primal Planet is a great example, combining the pixel art and exploration of Metroidvanias with a really unique plot. Announced recently, Primal Planet is already making plenty of wishlists on Steam.

Developer and publisher Seethingswarm is not a team, but a single person who goes by Albert. The solo game dev is set to launch a brand new project which can now be Wishlisted on Steam. It’s always incredible to me to see the reveal trailers, as shared below, of a solo project. It’s a fascinating combination of passion, talent, and vision that almost leaves me looking forward to more indie titles in a calendar year than major studio releases. Add Primal Planet to that list of games I’m eagerly awaiting following a great reveal.

Primal Planet is a prehistoric Metroidvania that combines survival and crafting elements with pixel graphics that harken back to the SNES days. With a retro aesthetic and an insane story, the game promises to be something familiar yet unique. As a cave dweller fighting to protect his family, you’re forced to survive against t-rex attacks, UFOs, and a ton of other mysteries that unravel as you get to know the Primal Planet you’re on.

The survival and crafting element of Primal Planet is what confirmed my excitement. Well, that and the fact that ancient aliens are dropping T-rexes on the planet you live on. With a promising art style and some chaotic moments highlighted in the trailer, Primal Planet offers a lot of new takes on some of the best elements of the Metroidvania genre. By using natural resources to craft vital tools, weapons, and mixtures for healing and protection, it sounds like strategy will play heavily into staying alive on this planet.

Primal Planet is set to release in 2025 and can be wishlisted now on Steam. Let us know in the comments if you plan to check it out when it arrives next year!
