Having a strong social media presence can be a huge asset in gaming. Interacting with fans, analyzing trends, and putting the game’s name out there is a sound marketing strategy. Some companies go all-out, such as OperaGX on X (formerly Twittter) or Wendy’s on Facebook. I was scrolling my “For You” on X when I suddenly saw Cult of the Lamb‘s account tweet the following: “We will add sex to the game if we hit 300k followers by the end of the year.” This was more than enough to stop my scrolling in its tracks and investigate the ridiculous proposition.

It was at this point that I realized that Cult of the Lamb‘s… cult following, seemingly half-jokingly/half-seriously wants the developers, Massive Monster, to add sex to the cutely-presented cult simulator. This isn’t your average Diablo cow level. This is a running joke that’s months in, and the account’s poster surely knows it more than anyone. What’s nuts is that this blasé bluff turned into a massive surge of followers to the account; clearly, the follower count was below 300k before the post, and as of the time of writing, it has absolutely ballooned to more than 360k followers, a completely-unprecedented rise.

This off-kilter marketing ploy has come at a great time for Cult of the Lamb‘s player base to increase, as it comes off the heels of a free DLC announcement for the upcoming update. “Sins of the Flesh” is due out early in 2024. It seems like everyone on the team is behind the joke, as further posts showcased the developers’ hesitance to implement the new feature, as well as adding a line of code to technically add “sexInGame” to fulfill the wish. This has been a fun saga to watch unfold, and even though I haven’t played the game yet, fun like this is enough to get me interested.
