By now I would hope that everyone realizes the major flaw in the concept of mobile and live-service games. At some point, somewhere, one day the game will get shut down. All your invested money will disappear into the void that is the sunsetting of servers. Surprisingly, when Mega Man X Dive was about to shut down, Capcom decided to create a solution to this problem.

Mega Man X Dive Offline is a fully playable offline version of Mega Man X Dive. All monetization methods have been removed, so you can fully unlock all the content in the game with in-game currency rather than purchasing premium currency. Everything that was made available throughout Mega Man X Dive’s gameplay run is available here, allowing mobile gaming fans (and Mega Man fans) to enjoy it just by paying a one-time purchase price.

The gameplay is simple. You have a primary and secondary attack (Buster and Saber usually) along with two other abilities. Sometimes it is a charged attack and a missile, other times it may be other character-specific abilities. By completing levels and challenges you’ll gain materials to level up your characters, as well as “memories” which can be used to unlock characters and weaponry.

You can upgrade your weapons, characters, insert “chips” based around various villains and bosses from the Mega Man franchise, and even unlock skins. The levels can be somewhat repetitive in the same way most mobile game levels are, but they are easy to pick up and play. The controls are surprisingly smooth with a gamepad as well.

I’m mildly annoyed that they didn’t voice the game in English. Regardless, the dialogue is big enough and easy enough to read that it doesn’t really matter. The font is easy to read too, so there shouldn’t be any issues if you have problems with stylized fonts.

In truth, Mega Man X Dive Offline is a simple, yet satisfying game for fans of the Mega Man franchise. It has the mobile game grind if you want to maximize your character’s stats and abilities, without all the monetization attached. There are hundreds of levels, including all the in-game events that were available when Mega Man X Dive was live in Japan.

The storyline takes you through a unique dive into the “Deep Log” a collective consciousness of data from the Mega Man X franchise. As such, you’ll be able to play through familiar areas and against familiar bosses. With that in mind, I think Mega Man X Dive Offline is probably a perfect game for Mega Man fans to enjoy as a timewaster or as a deep dive into the franchise’s history.

I could also see this being a great road trip game on the Steam Deck. I happen to enjoy playing a few levels in between doing emails or other work-related things. I have a few issues with the limitations of the options menu provided, but with Mega Man X Dive being a mobile game originally, I am not that surprised. Luckily you can customize the size of the window if you’re playing in windowed mode rather than fullscreen mode.

Overall, Mega Man X Dive Offline is a decent experience that fans of the franchise shouldn’t miss out on. It isn’t the best Mega Man X release, but I love that it preserves a mobile experience in a way that doesn’t nullify the effort the developers put into the original game, or the time, adoration, and investment the original community put into it.
