Released in 2001, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 was a relatively big hit in Japan on the PlayStation 2 and PSP. Released in the U.S. a few years later, it appeased fans of the franchise but failed to make a huge splash. In recent years, however, particularly thanks to the recent release of the ninth entry in 2020, Koei Tecmo Games has seen an uptick in interest and has decided to launch a remake of Romance of The Three Kingdoms 8. Here’s what we know so far.

The franchise puts players in control of warring factions of feudal China. As you direct heroes toward victory, you play a hand in the story of the Three Kingdoms of Wei, Wu, and Shu. Choosing from one of eight classes, you try to fulfill missions and win battles, earning good fortune for your side. Many battles featured in the game are actual fights that erupted throughout that time. There is even some lighter action including marriage, finding brothers or rivals, and more.

An expanded version of the game with a “Power Up Kit” was released for PC a few years back, but this new remake will take the original game and put it in its best quality and format yet. Updated graphics and more game features were promised recently at the Tokyo Games Show. We’ll hopefully get more details as we creep closer to the release of this cult favorite.

Romance of The Three Kingdoms 8 will launch in early 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via Steam. Let us know in the comments if you plan on revisiting this one or checking it out for the first time!
