Charles Martinet is likely to be the best-known voice actor in video game history. While a large number of people might not know him by name, a majority would recognize any of Mario’s voice lines in a heartbeat. Martinet first voiced everyone’s favorite plumber in 1991, and after 32 years, his career as Mario’s voice actor is coming to an end.

This is according to an announcement made by Nintendo of America via X. Coinciding with this announcement came another one confirming that Martinet won’t be making any sort of appearance in the latest game in the franchise, Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Within their post, Nintendo announced that while his role as Mario’s voice has ended, Martinet will now be working as Mario Ambassador, a new role within the company. If I had to guess, he is likely to work on PR and public appearances from now on. While I am saddened by the announcement, I understand that all good things have come to an end. Charles Martinet deserves to call it, provided he was involved in the choice.

I’m sure Nintendo will be making smart choices when deciding on a new voice for Mario, and I’ll be happy as long as they don’t end up picking the same voice they did for the Super Mario Bros. Movie. A lot of people had issues with Chris Pratt as Mario, so having him voice Mario in the games full time seems like a bad idea. Plus, it just doesn’t seem sustainable for such an iconic character and prolific series. A special video message by Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles Martinet will be posted at a later date.

Hey there! I'm Aaron, 26 and from Germany. I mostly play games with a stronger emphasis on a good story, but occasionally can be found delving into a genre I'm not too accustomed to. Diversity and accessibility are important aspects in gaming for me as well, which are always important conversations to have for me personally.
