This week Theorycraft Games, an independent game studio unveiled its newest IP. Dubbed Project Loki, this title looks to capture the competitive PVP market by storm. Project Loki is a team-focused game stated to be “equal parts hero shooter, action game, and battle royale.” The development team for this new game is led by Joe Tung whose previous work included development on titles such as League of Legends and Halo.

Project Loki looks to maintain many elements of these titles with a top-down camera angle and a heavy emphasis on traversal and mobility. The main differences here seem to be the overall lack of minions, a staple of the MOBA genre that provides the main backbone of character progression. Executive producer Jonathan Belliss stated in an interview with Polygon that the combat system is based around ranged combat. Taking cues from team shooters like Overwatch, Project Loki throws you right into the action with fast-paced fights starting from the initial launch.

Joe Tung went on to discuss that players are given the ability to choose from a plethora of unique powers and weapons that will allow them to craft unique strategies and character builds. This is where the MOBA influences come to the forefront, as Jonathan discussed how every hero will advance and unlock a set of passive abilities over the course of a game. Players will then supplement these abilities with other random powers gained from finding hidden vaults or defeating their opponents. From the brief gameplay trailer there also seemed to be a decent variety of maps and environments.

Along with the first initial glimpse of gameplay, the team next announced that Project Loki held a PC playtest of a pre-alpha build from June 29th through the 30th. You can register for future playtests (presumably) on the Theorycraft website. This certainly seems like an ambitious project. Only time will tell if Project Loki can manage to deliver on the studio’s major goals and break into the Esports scene to compete with the giants.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
