I am a massive Pikmin fan. I’ve played and enjoyed every game that has been released for the franchise (aside from the mobile one) since it began. As such, I’m excited to see the new frontiers and fun that Pikmin 4 brings when it releases on July 21st. However, the newest trailer for Pikmin 4 revealed something that I was not expecting.

Pikmin 4 will have character creation. You’ll play as a member of the Galactic Rescue team, who is sent to rescue the stranded Captain Olimar. Now, my first thought here was “Olimar got stranded again?” because seriously, this man needs a leash to his home planet or something. However, the idea of being able to create your own little space explorer is just too cool to ignore.

Nintendo has embraced the idea of character customization a lot in recent years. From games like Splatoon 3, Nintendo Switch Sports, and even creating Mii fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a lot of their games have at least mild customization elements. Pikmin 4 seems no different, with options for skin color, body type, hairstyle, hair color, and facial expressions on show.

Pikmin 4 will also include the new Ice Pikmin, which can freeze enemies and bodies of water. The canine companion Oatchi will debut as well and can transport Pikmin and smash obstacles. Shigeru Miyamoto also mentioned that the Pikmin will be easier to control than they were in past games, which is a welcome surprise.

Overall, I’m incredibly excited for Pikmin 4 to release on July 21st. I love the franchise, and this new entry will no doubt be an absolute blast. Seriously though, someone needs to give Olimar some tips on how not to crash-land places, this is beginning to be a pattern. Is he driving drunk? Don’t go to space under the influence, kids.
