All of the heavy hitters in the fighting game genre are coming out with new entries. Street Fighter 6 is coming out next month and the interest it’s garnered seems to be at an all-time high for the series. Although Tekken 8 doesn’t have a set release date, many are expecting to see it within the next year or so given that people have had the opportunity to play it. Not to mention all of the character trailers that we’ve seen of it so far. Right up there with the most looked-forward-to fighting games is one that hasn’t even been properly announced – Mortal Kombat 12.

Aside from tweets from Ed Boon that could possibly range from cryptic teases to a little bit of fun trolling, the biggest piece of information we know came from a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call a couple of months ago. That call name dropped Mortal Kombat 12 and mentioned a release for later this year. With it now becoming one of the current worst-kept secrets in video games, everyone has been waiting for an official announcement. We’ll still be waiting for that a bit longer, but we certainly do have a tease for what’s to come thanks to a video from developer NetherRealm Studios.

The video itself serves as a celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary and features members of the team thanking the community. It ends with Ed Boon thanking the fans and saying they’re not done yet, followed by a clip showing grains of sand dropping before one explodes in what might best be described as a Big Bang-like scene.

This isn’t a lot to go off of, but sand and more specifically “time” had a big role in the story for Mortal Kombat 11. The ending of the Aftermath DLC expansion really has left them open to take this new entry wherever they want, so your guess on what it’ll entail is as good as mine. Here’s hoping this tease will be soon followed by an official reveal.

Samuel Moreno

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
