This week EA debuted a surprisingly intriguing brand-new IP with a reveal trailer. The trailer showcased a nice mix of both story and gameplay. Immortals of Aveum is a single-player focused first-person shooter with entirely magic-based combat.

Although the story and dialogue didn’t look fantastic, it was the gameplay that really captured my interest. Merging a first-person shooter into a high-fantasy setting is something that hasn’t been done much. The magic variety and effects seem incredibly diverse and satisfying much like Forspoken, which I felt despite flaws succeeded in delivering an outstanding magic combat experience. Immortals of Aveum looks to deliver a similar mix with combat based around counters and chained attacks.

Immortals of Aveum is published under a brand new studio of industry veterans called Ascendant Studios. The game is directed by Brett Robbins, known for his work on Call of Duty and Dead Space.  Players take on the role of a young battlemage named Jak as he seeks to master all the schools of magic and survive in the war-torn fantasy world of Aveum. Originally one of the powerless Unforseen, Jak is recruited into the elite unit of Immortals by a character named General Kirkan after manifesting his magical powers.

Immortals of Aveum will be launching on July 20th, 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games store. Players who pre-order the game will also receive the Purified Arclight sigil. The sigil will increase the power of all of Jak’s spells.

Additionally, players who purchase the deluxe edition will receive a unique sigil, three rings, two bracers, and three totems. It’s hard to say how valuable this gear may be given the limited information available though. Nonetheless, I’m glad to see EA take a chance on more new IPs as I feel there is a lot of potential here, even if it does eventually amount to nothing.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
