The Super Mario Bros. Movie Soundtrack Gets Vinyl Pressing

With great early box office numbers in the United States and around the world, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is shaping up to be a success. As the animation team at Illumination sees its efforts come to light in front of fans of all ages, iam8bit announced a collaboration to press the film’s soundtrack to special physical releases, including a vinyl pressing. With the digital version out now, here’s what you’ll need to know if you decide to pick up the physical edition.

iam8bit is releasing three physical versions of the soundtrack to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, including a vinyl pressing, CDs, and cassette tapes. Don’t shrug that last format off if you think it’s outdated. Many record companies are releasing cassettes now because Gen-Z is very into collecting them. I myself, not a Gen-Z’er, even started picking up a few for fun. Pre-orders for all three formats are open now and you can place your order here.

The soundtrack is a joint effort between Nintendo composer Koji Kondo and film composer Brian Tyler (Fast & Furious series, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Crazy Rich Asians). The soundtrack is quite good and blends the modern take of the movie with the history of Super Mario Bros. quite well. Every version of the physical release will feature all 36 tracks from the entire soundtrack. Yes, that includes the Jack Black-sung Bowser ballad. A general release for other retailers will feature the vinyl pressings in red and green records, but only iam8bit is getting the pink and yellow edition. If that’s appealing to you, you’ll want to pre-order quickly. The records run $41.99 USD while the cassettes and CDs cost $19.99 USD. The expected release date of these physical versions is Q3 2023.
